Southern Energy Renewables Louisiana Facility
Southern Energy Renewables is developing a $1.4 billion biomass-to-fuels facility in St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, designed to convert regional wood-waste biomass into green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using gasification and integrated carbon capture and sequestration. The project was advanced through multiple partnerships in 2025–2026, including a December 4, 2025 agreement with DevvStream to combine carbon management, environmental attribute monetization, and project financing capabilities. In parallel, Monroe Sequestration Partners (MSP) signed an agreement with Southern Energy in 2026 to provide a pathway for permanent CO₂ sequestration, supporting the project’s carbon-negative fuel strategy. Additionally, Southern Energy Renewables and Axens entered into a memorandum of understanding (announced 2026) to advance process technology and engineering integration for the methanol-to-SAF pathway. The facility is expected to produce approximately 220,000 metric tons per year of methanol and ~26–28 million gallons per year of SAF in its initial phase, with long-term expansion potential to ~2.3 million metric tons of methanol and 276 million gallons per year of SAF. Development milestones include a targeted final investment decision in Q3 2027, construction beginning in late 2027, and commercial operations by Q3–late 2029, with subsequent expansion phases planned for 2031 and 2034.
