Chevron
Svante Kern River Pilot
Chevron and Svante jointly deployed and operated an engineering-scale carbon capture pilot at Chevron’s Kern River oil field in California to validate Svante’s solid sorbent VeloxoTherm capture technology on natural gas flue gas. The project was funded through a DOE cooperative agreement totaling $23.4 million, including $13.0 million in federal funding and $10.4 million in Chevron cost share, and ran from October 2020 through August 2024. The pilot facility was designed to capture approximately 25 tonnes per day of CO₂ and tested performance across flue gas concentrations ranging from about 4% to 14% CO₂. Results demonstrated stable long-term operation, achievement of 95% CO₂ product purity, capture recovery near 83% under representative conditions, and rapid load-following capability with roughly 60-second adsorption–desorption cycle response times. Chevron served as the host site and prime contractor, Svante supplied the capture technology, Kiewit Engineering and Kiewit Power Constructors supported EPC execution, Electricore acted as program administrator, and Offshore Technology Services supported operations and maintenance.
