Tröegs Independent Brewing CO2 Utilization Project

The Tröegs Brewing CO2 Reclamation System is a biogenic CO₂ capture and on-site utilization installation at Tröegs Independent Brewing Company's brewery in Hershey, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, designed to make the brewery fully "CO₂ self-sufficient" by capturing the approximately 1 million pounds (roughly 450 metric tonnes) of CO₂ generated annually by beer fermentation and reusing it in downstream beverage production stages such as packaging and carbonation, replacing purchased merchant CO₂. The project has been rolled out in three phases: Phase 1 (efficiency and leak reduction combined with a Nitrogen Generation system) cut CO₂ usage by 25-30%; Phase 2 (completed after September 2022 tank delivery) installed on-site storage capacity of approximately 50 tons of CO₂ (roughly one month of the brewery's usage) as production backup; and Phase 3 (announced March 2026) added three custom-built compressor containers that make up the active capture system, with piping installation underway to bring the system online and cover nearly all of the brewery's annual CO₂ demand. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection awarded Tröegs a $204,284 grant on August 12, 2026 under the Reducing Industrial Sector Emissions in Pennsylvania (RISE PA) Small-scale Award Track (SAT) — part of a $396 million statewide industrial decarbonization program funded through the U.S. EPA's Climate Pollution Reduction Grants and administered by the Pennsylvania Technical Assistance Program (PennTAP) at Penn State — with estimated annual energy savings of $53,416.
