Veolia Sheffield ERF C-Capture Pilot

Veolia and Sheffield City Council have launched a two-year trial of a non-amine post-combustion carbon capture system at the Sheffield Energy Recovery Facility (ERF), a municipal waste-to-energy plant in Sheffield, UK, described as the UK’s first non-amine capture pilot in the waste sector. The pilot uses a proprietary non-amine solvent developed by Leeds-based clean tech company C-Capture in collaboration with the University of Leeds, chosen as an alternative to conventional amine systems for lower cost, improved safety, and reduced energy penalty. The unit currently captures up to one metric tonne of CO₂ per day from the ERF’s flue gas; captured CO₂ will initially be vented during the testing phase to validate performance rather than stored or utilised. The trial forms part of Veolia’s broader GreenUp strategic program. The pilot’s stated intent is to establish a commercial blueprint for capturing, storing, and utilizing CO₂ from local waste-to-energy facilities located outside the UK’s four designated Track-1 industrial CCUS clusters (HyNet, East Coast Cluster, Acorn, Viking) where more than half of UK emissions occur. Announced August 4, 2026, the project sits at demonstration scale and does not yet have a designated storage or utilization pathway for post-trial commercial operation.
