Aramis

The Aramis project is a large-scale carbon capture, transportation, and storage (CCS) initiative in the Netherlands, led by a consortium of TotalEnergies, Shell, Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN), and Gasunie. It aims to serve hard-to-decarbonize industrial emitters—like steel, chemical, cement, refinery, and waste facilities—by collecting captured CO₂ at a central hub in Rotterdam (Maasvlakte), and transporting it via an offshore pipeline to depleted gas fields under the North Sea. Designed with open-access infrastructure, the project is intended to accommodate multiple emitters and storage operators, facilitating scalable and flexible deployment. With initial capacity targeting at least 5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, Aramis is engineered to expand up to 22 million tonnes annually. A final investment decision is expected in 2026, with operations scheduled to begin around 2027–2030. Designated as a Project of Common Interest by the European Commission and prioritized within the Netherlands’ long-term energy and climate program, Aramis is a key building block in establishing a robust, integrated CCS infrastructure across Northwestern Europe.
