Athabasca Banks Carbon Hub
The Athabasca Banks Carbon Hub is one of the regional carbon storage projects selected by the Alberta government through its second Request for Full Project Proposals process. It’s proposed by Vault 44.01 Ltd. together with Moraine Initiatives Ltd., targeting an area north of Whitecourt, Alberta. The project plans to leverage deep Basal Cambrian sandstone formations to securely store CO₂ emissions—primarily from a proposed Moraine Initiatives gas-fired power plant in the region. It has a proposed storage capacity of 100,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year and is expected to become operational by 2027 as it moves through the evaluation and permitting phases. This project was one of the 19 selected in 2022 by the Government of Alberta to evaluate pore space for carbon storage, as part of the province’s initiative to advance cost-effective, open-access CO₂ sequestration hubs.
