Atlas Carbon Sequestration Hub

The Atlas Carbon Sequestration Hub is a collaborative initiative between Shell Canada and ATCO EnPower, located just east of Edmonton, within Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Designed as an open-access CCS infrastructure hub, it will serve multiple industrial emitters in the region—starting with CO₂ sourced from Shell’s Polaris carbon capture project. The first phase aims to be operational by the end of 2028, offering permanent underground storage of captured CO₂ through secure geological formations. Once fully developed, Atlas is positioned to become a cornerstone of Alberta’s decarbonization ambition, underpinning the province’s efforts to reduce emissions and scale industrial carbon storage. This project was one of the 19 selected in 2022 by the Government of Alberta to evaluate pore space for carbon storage, as part of the province’s initiative to advance cost-effective, open-access CO₂ sequestration hubs.
