Bifrost
The Bifrost CCS Project is a Danish-led initiative aiming to establish a European carbon capture and storage (CCS) hub in the North Sea. Managed by a consortium—TotalEnergies, Noreco, Nordsøfonden (the Danish Underground Consortium), Ørsted, and the Technical University of Denmark,it seeks to repurpose the depleted Harald gas fields (including both sandstone and chalk reservoirs) for secure, long-term CO₂ storage. Supported by public funding, the project will evaluate the feasibility of using existing wells and pipelines for CO₂ transport and injection, while advancing environmental monitoring, geomechanical modeling, ship and pipeline transport concepts, and social-economic studies. Initial results indicate strong potential, with plans to begin CO₂ injection as early as 2030 at an initial capacity of at least 5 million tonnes per year, scalable over time as part of Europe’s broader decarbonization strategy. Let me know if you'd like insights into storage geology, transport infrastructure, regulatory pathways, or the Bifrost project’s role within Denmark’s CCS roadmap.
