Conestoga Energy
Bonanza BioEnergy CCS
Conestoga Energy, in partnership with Bonanza BioEnergy, has successfully drilled its first Class VI carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) well in Finney County, Kansas, marking a key milestone in the development of commercial-scale carbon storage in the Midwest. The well is designed to inject CO₂ over a mile underground into secure geologic formations, with the primary goal of capturing and permanently storing emissions from the adjacent Bonanza BioEnergy ethanol plant, which could sequester around 150,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually. The project positions Conestoga as one of the early CCS developers in EPA Region 7, and the site may also accept CO₂ from other industrial sources or support nearby enhanced oil recovery operations. With the drilling complete, Conestoga is preparing a full Class VI permit application with the U.S. EPA, which, once approved, will allow the well to begin injection and advance regional carbon storage efforts.
