CarbonNet

The CarbonNet Project is a government-backed initiative, jointly funded by the Victorian and Australian governments, to develop a commercial-scale, multi-user carbon capture and storage (CCS) hub in Gippsland, Victoria. Its core plan involves gathering CO₂ from industrial emitters in the Latrobe Valley via a ~100 km pipeline (comprising ~80 km onshore and ~20 km offshore), then transporting and injecting that CO₂ into offshore offshore reservoirs—initially into the Pelican site located approximately 1.5 km beneath the Bass Strait seabed. Pelican has been assessed to potentially store up to 6 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, with broader basin capacity scaled up to 20 gigatonnes, and an additional storage site (Kookaburra) slated to follow later once operational.
