Cogdell Canyon Reef Unit
The Cogdell Canyon Reef Unit is a mature CO₂-enhanced oil recovery (CO₂-EOR) project located in Scurry County, Texas, within the Horseshoe Atoll trend of the Permian Basin. The field produces from Pennsylvanian-age Canyon Reef carbonate reservoirs, consisting of reefal buildups formed along the margins of the ancient Horseshoe Atoll carbonate platform. Initially discovered in the mid-20th century and developed through primary production followed by waterflooding, the field was later redeveloped using miscible CO₂ injection to recover remaining oil trapped within heterogeneous reef facies and fracture systems. The project leverages the extensive Permian Basin CO₂ pipeline network supplying naturally sourced CO₂ from Rocky Mountain domes. Similar to neighboring SACROC, Reinecke, and Diamond M projects, the Cogdell CO₂ flood focuses on improving sweep efficiency in complex carbonate reservoirs while achieving significant long-term subsurface CO₂ storage.
