California Resources Corp / Carbon TerraVault
CTV V
The Carbon TerraVault V (CTV V) Project, led by California Resources Corporation (CRC), is a Class VI CO₂ storage development in San Joaquin County, California. It will use six injection wells targeting the Mokelumne River and Starkey Formations, with a planned capacity of up to 16.7 million tonnes over 25 years (about 0.67 MMT annually). Thick shale units such as the Capay and Nortonville Shales provide strong geologic seals, and monitoring wells will track plume migration and protect underground water sources. In August 2023, CRC applied for a Class VI permit to store up to 17 million tonnes of CO₂, expanding its Carbon TerraVault portfolio alongside CTV II, III, and IV, and reinforcing the Sacramento Basin as a cornerstone of California’s carbon storage strategy.
