Dark Horse
The Dark Horse Treating Facility is an acid gas injection (AGI) carbon storage project operated by Piñon Midstream in Lea County, New Mexico, within the Delaware Basin. The project permanently injects treated acid gas streams containing CO₂ and H₂S generated from regional sour gas processing into deep geologic formations through two injection wells (Independence AGI-1 and Independence AGI-2) under an EPA Subpart RR monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) plan. The wells provide long-term geologic sequestration by injecting into deep carbonate formations located several thousand feet below potable aquifers and hydrocarbon-producing zones. The facility is designed to support flaring reduction and sour gas development by providing centralized acid gas disposal and carbon management infrastructure. The two wells have a combined injection authorization of approximately 20 MMSCFD of acid gas, equivalent to roughly 250,000 metric tonnes CO₂ per year, with monitoring systems in place to quantify injected volumes and verify permanent storage under EPA Subpart RR requirements
