Reconciliation Energy Transition / Sumitomo
East Calgary Region Carbon Sequestration Hub
The RETI CTS Hub is an open-access carbon capture and storage infrastructure project being developed east of Calgary, Alberta. It is led by Reconciliation Energy Transition Inc. (RETI) in partnership with Sumitomo Corporation Group, which holds a significant equity stake under a joint development agreement signed in May 2024. The hub is designed to include CO₂ compression facilities, a pipeline network, and injection and monitoring wells, enabling permanent sequestration of CO₂ in deep saline aquifers with a target capacity of up to 10 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. The project intends to support a diverse array of industrial decarbonization needs—including emissions from power plants, clean hydrogen, biofuel, and Direct Air Capture facilities—and aims to commence carbon sequestration operations by 2026. In addition to the environmental benefits, RETI emphasizes meaningful Indigenous ownership of the infrastructure, aligning with its mission of advancing economic reconciliation while delivering low-carbon energy transition solutions. This project was one of the 19 selected in 2022 by the Government of Alberta to evaluate pore space for carbon storage, as part of the province’s initiative to advance cost-effective, open-access CO₂ sequestration hubs.
