Greensand

The Greensand carbon storage project, led by INEOS and Wintershall Dea, is one of Europe’s flagship CCS initiatives located offshore Denmark in the North Sea. The project repurposes the depleted Nini West oil field for CO₂ storage, with an estimated capacity of up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂ per year during its initial phase and the potential to expand significantly in the future. Greensand aims to provide a scalable solution for industrial emitters across Europe, combining CO₂ capture, shipping, and offshore storage. In March 2023, the project achieved a milestone by completing the world’s first full value chain cross-border CO₂ injection, transporting CO₂ from Belgium to Denmark and safely storing it under the seabed, marking a major step toward large-scale European carbon sequestration.
