Hickory CCS Hub

The Hickory CCS Hub is a proposed carbon dioxide geologic storage project being evaluated by Tenaska in Warren County, Indiana. While still in the pre-permitting and feasibility assessment stage, the proposal outlines a regional CCS facility designed to capture CO₂ from nearby industrial, manufacturing, and power facilities, compress and transport the CO₂ via pipeline, and permanently inject it into deep geological formations located more than a mile underground. Early conceptual planning anticipates the development of approximately 3–5 CO₂ injection wells supported by 6–10 monitoring wells, with ~25,000 acres of underground pore space identified for potential CO₂ storage. Initial geology studies indicate the subsurface could be suitable for secure, long-term sequestration pending further seismic and reservoir characterization work. At this stage, the project does not yet have finalized Class VI permits, specific injection targets, or reservoir details publicly available (e.g., injection rates or total storage capacity), reflecting its early development status. Community engagement and county permitting for preliminary seismic studies and right-of-way activities have been underway as Tenaska seeks to assess storage potential and move toward formal EPA Class VI permitting if geology and stakeholder conditions support advancement. The Hickory CCS Hub remains part of Tenaska’s broader portfolio of CCS hub developments aimed at offering CO₂ transport and storage solutions across multiple U.S. regions
