Vault 44.01
Linden
The Vault 44.01 Linden Project is a Class VI carbon storage development located in northern Montgomery County, Indiana, on the eastern edge of the Illinois Basin. The project is designed to permanently sequester carbon dioxide in the Cambrian-age Mt. Simon Sandstone, a formation known for its thickness, porosity, and history as a reliable storage reservoir for both natural gas and CO₂. The overlying Eau Claire Shale serves as the primary confining unit, with additional protection from the Knox, Maquoketa, and New Albany formations, providing multiple layers of geological containment . The Linden Project is permitted for up to 0.7 million tonnes of CO₂ per year over 30 years, totaling an estimated 21 million tonnes of storage capacity. Vault 44.01 will serve as the owner, operator, and permit holder for the transport pipeline and injection well (LSH INJ1). In addition to the main injection well, three monitoring wells will be drilled: a deep observation well, an above-confining zone well, and a USDW monitoring well. These will allow continuous monitoring of plume behavior, pressure fronts, and potential impacts to underground sources of drinking water . The site has undergone detailed geologic and geophysical characterization, including seismic surveys, stratigraphic analysis, and petrophysical evaluation of analog wells, to ensure capacity, injectivity, and containment. The project will also conduct a baseline 3D seismic survey before injection begins to confirm storage integrity. With multiple layers of geologic security and a robust monitoring plan, the Linden Project is positioned as a long-term, large-scale CO₂ sequestration hub for the Midwest.
