Magnus and Thistle Carbon Storage Project
EnQuest has been awarded carbon storage licenses for the Magnus and Thistle fields, part of the UK’s inaugural offshore CO₂ storage licensing round conducted by the North Sea Transition Authority. These fields, located in the Northern North Sea off Shetland, are attractive storage targets due to their extensive characterization and established infrastructure, especially the connection to the Sullom Voe Terminal, which facilitates importing CO₂ in liquid form and transporting it via the existing East of Shetland pipeline to offshore injection sites. This setup enables a cost-effective “carbon megastore” capable of initially storing 10 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, with geological capacity potentially exceeding one billion tonnes in the long term.
