Marquis Carbon
The Marquis Biocarbon Project, developed by Marquis Carbon Injection LLC, is a Class VI CO₂ sequestration project located near Hennepin in Putnam County, Illinois. The project is designed to capture and inject over 1 million metric tons of biogenic CO₂ per year from Marquis’ ethanol facility into the Mt. Simon Sandstone, one of the most studied and suitable storage formations in the Illinois Basin. The Eau Claire Shale provides the primary confining zone, ensuring containment. The project will utilize a new injection well (MCI CCS 3) supported by multiple monitoring wells (MCI MW1, MCI MW2, and MCI ACZ1) and a network of shallow groundwater wells. Extensive site characterization including drilling of a stratigraphic test well, core sampling, geochemical testing, and acquisition of both 2D (2021) and 3D seismic surveys (2022) confirmed favorable geology, absence of significant faults, and high injectivity.
