Strathcona Resources
Meota East Carbon Storage Project
The Meota East Carbon Storage Project is a carbon capture and geological sequestration initiative being developed by Strathcona Resources at its Meota East thermal oil facility near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada. The project will integrate CO₂ capture, transport, and underground storage with Strathcona’s steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) operations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from heavy oil production. In 2024–2025, the Government of Saskatchewan provided $12.5 million in funding through its Technology Fund to support the development of a carbon capture system, pipeline infrastructure, and sequestration site for Meota East, expected to enable capture and storage of roughly 200,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually—approximately 90 % of the site’s emissions once implemented. The Meota East project also benefits from a broader up to C$2 billion CCS partnership between Strathcona and the Canada Growth Fund (CGF), which is targeted at deploying capture and sequestration infrastructure across Strathcona’s Saskatchewan and Alberta SAGD facilities and anticipated to support permanent geological storage of up to ~2 million metric tons of CO₂ per year across multiple sites, with Meota East expected to be one of the first to reach final investment decisions and construction under that partnership.
