Mitchell CarbonSAFE

The Mitchell CarbonSAFE Phase II initiative is a U.S. Department of Energy‑funded feasibility study led by the University of Illinois (Champaign) in collaboration with the Illinois State Geological Survey and industrial partner Heidelberg Materials. The study focuses on the Cambro‑Ordovician geologic formations beneath the Mitchell Cement Plant in Indiana. Its core activities include drilling a deep stratigraphic test well (targeting depths of approximately 7,000 to 7,250 feet) and conducting a 50‑mile, two‑dimensional seismic survey. These efforts aim to collect lithostratigraphic and structural data to assess the site's suitability to store more than 50 million metric tons of CO₂ over a 30-year timeframe, using DOE-standard resource classification systems.
