Santos / Beach Energy
Moomba
The Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage Project, led by Santos in collaboration with Beach Energy, is Australia’s first large-scale onshore CCS initiative, located in the Cooper Basin, South Australia. Phase 1 began operations in September–October 2024, with an initial injection capacity of up to 1.7 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, using five injection wells that inject into depleted oil and gas reservoirs within the Patchawarra, Strzelecki, and Marabooka formations. Since startup, the project has already injected 340,000 tonnes of CO₂, positioning it on track toward the year-end milestone of safely storing 1.7 million tonnes annually. The CCS hub supports Santos’ goal of net-zero operational emissions by 2040, leverages existing infrastructure to keep lifecycle costs low (under US $30 per tonne), and lays the foundation for a potential commercial carbon management services business serving domestic and regional industrial emitters.
