Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ)
The Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) project, developed by Spirit Energy, will transform the depleted South and North Morecambe gas fields in the East Irish Sea into one of the UK’s largest carbon storage hubs. With a total potential capacity of up to 1 gigatonne of CO₂, the site offers a long-term storage solution equivalent to roughly three years of current UK emissions. CO₂ will be transported to the hub via pipeline, ship, or rail, creating a flexible infrastructure capable of serving a wide range of industrial emitters. As a merchant-style facility, MNZ is designed to act as an open-access hub for industries across the UK and Europe. The project is a cornerstone of the MNZ | Peak Cluster Partnership, which aims to capture and store around 4 million tonnes of CO₂ annually from cement and lime producers starting in 2030. Alongside its climate benefits, MNZ is expected to deliver significant economic impact, including an estimated £1.8 billion in GVA by 2050, protection of more than 13,000 jobs, attraction of £5 billion in private investment, and a boost of £154 million annually in wages and skills development. In July 2025, the UK’s National Wealth Fund invested £28.6 million to advance the project through its Final Investment Decision stage, positioning MNZ as a key enabler of the UK’s industrial decarbonization strategy.
