Norne Carbon Storage Hub
Norne is a large-scale carbon storage network in Denmark that will include CO₂ reception facilities capable of receiving volumes from both domestic and international sources. From these hubs, CO₂ will be transported via pipelines to storage sites that utilize existing natural geological formations deep underground. Designed as an economical and safe solution, Norne provides CO₂-emitting companies with access to a reliable pathway for permanent storage, ensuring scalability to meet industrial demand. The project has also been designated a European Union Project of Common Interest, recognizing its importance as a priority cross-border infrastructure initiative. Operations are planned to begin by 2030, with CO₂ delivered either by pipeline or ship before being injected into newly developed, dedicated wells. The system is designed to handle large volumes, with an ambition to store more than 15 million tonnes of CO₂ annually by the mid-2030s. This capacity would make Norne one of the largest CO₂ storage networks in Europe, supported by existing offshore geological structures that provide long-term containment.
