Kinder Morgan
North Mcelroy Unit
The North McElroy Unit is a mature CO₂-enhanced oil recovery (CO₂-EOR) project located in Crane and Upton Counties, Texas, approximately 50 miles south of Midland within the Central Basin Platform of the Permian Basin. The field produces primarily from Permian-age Grayburg and San Andres carbonate reservoirs, which consist of dolomitized platform carbonates characterized by layered porosity, variable permeability, and significant heterogeneity typical of Permian Basin shelf-margin systems. Originally developed through primary production followed by waterflooding, the field was later redeveloped using miscible CO₂ injection to mobilize residual oil and increase ultimate recovery. CO₂ injection leverages the extensive West Texas CO₂ pipeline network supplying multiple tertiary projects. The North McElroy Unit covers approximately 11,600 acres, with Kinder Morgan historically holding a ~97.5% working interest and operating it as part of its broader Permian CO₂-EOR portfolio alongside SACROC, Diamond M, and Sharon Ridge.
