Pelican Sequestration Hub
The Pelican Sequestration Project, led by Pelican Sequestration Hub, LLC (an Oxy subsidiary), is a large-scale carbon storage initiative in Livingston, Parish Louisiana covering over 30,000 acres of subsurface pore space leased from Weyerhaeuser Company, which continues to manage the surface as a working forest. The project has secured an offtake agreement with CF Industries to store approximately 2.3 million metric tons of CO₂ per year for 25 years. The project spans ~30,900 acres of deep saline aquifers and includes multiple Class VI permits. Site characterization is based on a 2022 stratigraphic test well (Pelican MLR 004), extensive seismic data, and over 100 legacy wells, confirming high-quality sandstone reservoirs with good porosity and permeability, overlain by thick, regionally continuous confining shales and carbonates. The injection and storage complex consists of stacked Oligocene-aged sand bodies deposited in shallow marine and deltaic environments, with multiple confining layers providing redundancy for containment. Planned development includes at least two injection wells (CCS 1 and CCS 2) located on the eastern acreage, with potential expansion to additional wells as capacity builds out. Dynamic modeling and geomechanical analyses show safe containment under conservative injection pressures, with plume migration limited to leased acreage. The project incorporates comprehensive monitoring, testing, and corrective action programs, as well as a 50+ year post-injection site care (PISC) plan to ensure long-term CO₂ containment.
