Project Clear Horizon

The Project Clear Horizon initiative in Medicine Hat, Alberta, originally granted to the City to evaluate geological suitability for a regional carbon sequestration hub, has now officially been transferred to Imperial Oil Limited (the Canadian affiliate of ExxonMobil). Imperial has been entrusted to carry forward feasibility studies—including geological assessments, modeling, and potential injection viability—with the ultimate goal of developing a permanent, open-access CO₂ storage facility capable of sequestering around 2–3 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, primarily serving local heavy emitters such as the city’s power plant, chemical, and fertilizer facilities. This project was one of the 19 selected in 2022 by the Government of Alberta to evaluate pore space for carbon storage, as part of the province’s initiative to advance cost-effective, open-access CO₂ sequestration hubs.
