Project Tundra

The Project Tundra, spearheaded by Minnkota Power Cooperative in partnership with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kiewit, is a large-scale CO₂ capture and storage initiative sited at the Milton R. Young Station, a lignite-fired power plant near Center in Oliver County, North Dakota. The project aims to capture up to 4 million metric tons of CO₂ annually using advanced amine-based post-combustion technology. Storage will occur in deep geologic formations, specifically the Broom Creek and Deadwood Formations. Project Tundra has earned regulatory approval of Class VI storage permits from the North Dakota Industrial Commission, and allocation of federal support including up to $350 million in DOE funding and $250 million in low-interest loans from North Dakota’s Clean Sustainable Energy Authority (CSEA). The project design includes up to three Class VI injection wells. Construction is expected to begin in 2024 with completion by 2028.
