Qatargas Qatar LNG CCS

The Qatargas LNG CCS Project, developed and operated by Qatargas (a subsidiary of QatarEnergy), is located at the Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar. Commissioned in 2019, it was the first large-scale CCS project in the Middle East. The facility captures CO₂ from the LNG production process, specifically from gas treating and liquefaction units, where CO₂ is separated before liquefaction. The captured CO₂ is compressed and transported via a dedicated pipeline network to nearby injection sites. The project has an injection capacity of about 2.1 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, making it one of the largest LNG-integrated CCS operations in the world. CO₂ is permanently stored in deep subsurface formations beneath the Ras Laffan area, with long-term containment supported by robust monitoring and verification systems. The project forms a key part of Qatar’s broader strategy to expand CCS to over 11 million tonnes per year by 2035, integrating carbon management into its LNG export operations while supporting global decarbonization goals.
