Rocky Mountain Carbon Vault

The Rocky Mountain Carbon project is a bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) initiative located at the West Fraser pulp mill in Hinton, Alberta. It is designed to capture and permanently store between 1.0 and 1.3 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, making it one of the largest dedicated carbon removal projects in Canada. By pairing pulp and renewable materials production with carbon capture, the project combines industrial output with negative emissions, effectively removing atmospheric CO₂ while supporting the production of bio-based products. Captured CO₂ will be transported via a 30-kilometer pipeline to the Rocky Mountain Carbon Vault, a geological storage site northeast of Hinton. At this site, the CO₂ will be injected into deep underground formations through purpose-built wells for safe, permanent sequestration. The project is currently in the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) phase and involves partnerships with Vault 44.01, which holds the storage evaluation rights
