SEA CCS
The South East Australia Carbon Capture and Storage (SEA CCS) project was a collaborative initiative between Esso Australia (ExxonMobil) and Woodside Energy, aimed at reducing industrial CO₂ emissions in the Gippsland Basin. The project proposed capturing CO₂ from the onshore Longford gas plant, transporting it via a new ~19 km onshore pipeline to the existing pipeline corridor, and then using a repurposed offshore natural gas pipeline to move the CO₂ to the Bream A platform—around 46 km offshore in ~59 m of water. At Bream A, the existing wells would have been adapted for CO₂ injection into the depleted Bream reservoir. If expanded, the system could have eventually captured and stored up to 2 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, making a significant contribution to emissions reduction goals In March 2025, ExxonMobil formally cancelled the SEA CCS project. The decision includes the decommissioning of the Bream A platform, which was initially slated for conversion into a CO₂ injection hub.
