Equinor
Smeaheia
The Smeaheia CCS project, operated entirely by Equinor, is a major carbon capture and storage initiative in the Norwegian North Sea, east of the Troll field. It aims to become a pivotal storage hub for industrial CO₂ emissions across Europe. By the early 2030s, the project plans to begin injecting CO₂ into deep subsea reservoirs, with an initial target capacity of around 20 million tonnes per annum, scaling up to 30–50 million tonnes annually by 2035. To facilitate this, Equinor is exploring two main transport strategies: the CO₂ Highway Europe, a 1,000 km pipeline linking Northwestern Europe to the Smeaheia site, and a flexible ship-based transport model via a receiving terminal on Norway's west coast. These dual modalities are designed to accommodate various emitter locations and optimize logistical efficiency.
