Meriden Carbon
Steamboat Carbon Storage Hub
Meriden Carbon is an innovative venture formed by Wyoming ranchers and technical energy experts, structured around a landowner equity model rather than traditional leasing. In early 2023, landowners in Laramie County contributed pore-space rights across over 100,000 contiguous acres in the Denver–Julesburg Basin to establish the Steamboat Carbon Storage Hub. This effort aims to harness the region’s favorable geology—situated well below water and hydrocarbon zones with secure natural seals—to create one of the largest geologic carbon storage sites in the United States. The venture, deeply rooted in local stewardship, emphasizes respect for land and legacy, granting ranching families a meaningful say in both business decisions and environmental outcomes. Meriden Carbon has been selected for negotiation of a DOE CarbonSAFE Phase II cooperative agreement, potentially unlocking around $9 million in funding. This award would enable advanced project development, including the drilling of stratigraphic wells and collaboration with the University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources, the Energy & Environmental Research Center, Colorado School of Mines’ Payne Institute, and Advanced Resources International. The goal is to validate and characterize this large-scale carbon storage resource and pave the way toward safe, scalable CCS infrastructure for Wyoming and beyond.
