On December 7, 2023, JAPEX, in partnership with Pertamina, Pertamina EP, and JOGMEC, launched a CO₂ injection field test, the first of its kind for JAPEX in Indonesia, at the Sukowati oil field in East Java. This pilot employs the “Huff & Puff” method, a CO₂-Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technique that involves injecting CO₂ into a well (“huff”), allowing it to interact with the oil in a soak phase, and then producing the CO₂ along with the mobilized oil (“puff”). The initiative aims to assess both enhanced recovery effectiveness and the feasibility of concurrent CO₂ storage in subsurface reservoirs. This pilot marks a vital milestone toward commercializing CCS/CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) in Indonesia. It is part of JAPEX’s broader “JAPEX2050” strategy, which prioritizes CO₂ injection and storage technologies as part of its vision for carbon-neutral energy operations. The company sees this project as a stepping-stone toward expanding its role as a diversified energy provider delivering low-carbon solutions both domestically and internationally.
