Sweetwater Carbon Storage Hub

The Sweetwater Carbon Storage Hub (SCS Hub) is a Class VI CO₂ geologic sequestration project developed by Frontier Carbon Solutions in southwestern Wyoming, spanning Sweetwater, Lincoln, and Uinta Counties along the Moxa Arch in the Greater Green River Basin. The hub encompasses both private and state-owned lands, and is designed as a multi-well regional storage hub serving industrial emitters, direct air capture (DAC), and carbon removal projects. Frontier plans to develop three Class VI injection wells in the initial phase—Frontier LCS 1-23, Frontier J 1-15, and Frontier AN 1-26—along with a dedicated deep monitoring well. At full buildout, the SCS Hub is designed to support up to ~5 million metric tons of CO₂ injection per year, with each individual injection well permitted for up to ~500,000 metric tons per year over an anticipated 20-year injection period. CO₂ will be injected into the Nugget Sandstone, a deep saline storage reservoir located at an average depth of approximately 13,700 feet, with an average thickness of ~820 feet and favorable porosity and permeability in the upper section of the formation. Long-term containment is provided by laterally extensive confining units, including the Twin Creek Formation above and the Ankareh Formation below the injection zone. Reservoir modeling and geomechanical analysis demonstrate that injection pressures will remain below 90% of fracture pressure, ensuring caprock integrity and protection of underground sources of drinking water. The SCS Hub has completed its first deep characterization well, received federal pore-space authorization from the Bureau of Land Management, and has secured commercial momentum through CO₂ storage and carbon removal offtake agreements, including DAC and BECCS-linked carbon removal credits, positioning the project as one of the most advanced CCS hubs in the U.S. Rocky Mountain region.
