Tangguh
The Tangguh UCC project (Ubadari, CCUS, and Compression) is poised to become Indonesia’s first large-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage initiative. Centered at the country’s Tangguh LNG facility in Papua Barat, the project involves developing the offshore Ubadari gas field, separating CO₂ from produced gas, and reinjecting it into nearby reservoirs to boost gas recovery while securely storing emissions. The Indonesian government has classified it as a national strategic project. With an investment of roughly US 7 billion, the initiative is expected to begin phased gas production in 2028, unlock an estimated 3 trillion cubic feet of additional natural gas resources, and sequester around 15 million tonnes of CO₂ during its initial phase. For execution, key contracts have been awarded: Saipem is handling the offshore engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of platforms and pipelines, while JGC (via its subsidiary P.T. JGC Indonesia) is responsible for the onshore compression facilities.
