Cowboy Clean Fuels
The Triangle Unit
The Triangle Unit Renewable Energy & Carbon Capture and Storage Project (TRECCS) is a commercial-scale carbon capture and storage initiative developed by Cowboy Clean Fuels, LLC in Campbell County, Wyoming, within the Powder River Basin. Unlike traditional CCS projects that inject industrial CO₂ directly, TRECCS employs a biogenic conversion approach using agriculturally derived feedstocks (notably sugar beet by-products such as molasses). These feedstocks are injected into deep coalbed methane (CBM) formations via existing non-producing CBM wells and associated infrastructure, where indigenous methanogenic microbes convert the feedstock into renewable methane (RNG) and CO₂. The CO₂ is permanently sequestered by adsorption onto the coal surface under natural hydrostatic pressure, while the methane is recovered, processed, and delivered as pipeline-quality RNG. The TRECCS project commenced commercial operations in mid-2024 following a Class V Notice to Inject permit from the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, and it has attracted both state Energy Matching Funds (~$7.8 M) and private investment (including a ~$13 M Series B financing) to support scaling. At full-scale operation, TRECCS is expected to sequester approximately 180,000 metric tons of CO₂ per year and produce about 0.7 billion cubic feet of RNG annually. Leveraging Wyoming’s existing CBM geology and legacy energy infrastructure, TRECCS is positioned as a dual-benefit project that combines carbon dioxide removal and renewable energy production, contributing to local economic development and state leadership in decarbonization technologies.
