ADNOC
West Aquifer
ADNOC’s West Aquifer carbon storage project is an onshore saline aquifer CO₂ sequestration development located near the Ruwais industrial region in western Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, and forms part of ADNOC’s broader strategy to expand carbon capture and demonstrate large-scale permanent storage in the Middle East. The project targets deep carbonate saline formations, including the Simsima and Um Eradhuma reservoirs, which have been assessed for long-term containment and injection feasibility. In 2024, the site received a Certificate of Feasibility from DNV, confirming the suitability of the subsurface geology and storage concept under international CCS standards. The storage hub is expected to support decarbonization of industrial emissions from ADNOC’s Ruwais refining and petrochemical complex and contribute toward ADNOC’s goal of scaling carbon capture and storage capacity to approximately 10 million tonnes per year by 2030. Specific injection rates, storage capacity, and well locations have not been publicly disclosed.
