Kassø
The Kassø e Methanol Facility in Tønder, Denmark produces e methanol using biogenic CO₂ sourced from a local biogas plant, 52.5 MW of Siemens Energy electrolyser capacity, and renewable electricity supplied by the adjacent Kassø Solar Park. The plant is designed for 42,000 tonnes per year of e methanol production across two methanol lines. The project reached major milestones in 2024 and 2025, including mechanical completion in June 2024, first green hydrogen production in January 2025, first raw e methanol production in March 2025, and official commissioning in May 2025. The facility is owned and operated through a joint venture between European Energy (51 percent) and Mitsui and Co (49 percent) under Solar Park Kassø ApS. On May 29, 2026, European Energy was awarded €228 million in German hydrogen-production subsidies through the European Hydrogen Bank’s Auction-as-a-Service program to expand its existing Kassø green hydrogen facility in Denmark by 150 MW. The expansion will build on the 52 MW Kassø plant that began operations in 2025, producing renewable hydrogen for e-methanol production, with support set at €1.07 per kilogram of hydrogen produced over a 10-year period and intended to supply German customers via the planned Danish Hydrogen Backbone pipeline.
