Mikkeli

The Mikkeli Power-to-Gas project is a planned renewable hydrogen and e-methane production facility being developed by Nordic Ren-Gas in cooperation with Etelä-Savon Energia in Mikkeli, Finland. The project will use renewable electricity to power electrolysis for green hydrogen production, which will be combined with captured CO₂ to synthesize renewable methane (e-methane) suitable for injection into the natural gas grid or use as a low-carbon fuel. Under the development agreements, Nordic Ren-Gas and Etelä-Savon Energia have committed to co-develop the project and explore a €100 million hydrogen and e-methane investment, advancing technical studies, grid integration, and industrial integration. The initiative aims to support regional decarbonization of energy supply and transport fuels, leveraging existing energy infrastructure in the Mikkeli region to scale renewable gas production and contribute to Finland’s climate targets. The project is currently in the pre-development and engineering phase, moving toward permitting and detailed design ahead of later construction.
