Aker Plant Amine Capture

The Aker carbon capture project, operated by Midcoast G&P (East Texas) L.The Aker carbon capture project, operated by Midcoast G&P (East Texas) L.P., a Momentum Midstream company, captures CO2 at the Aker gas processing plant in Freestone County, Texas. The plant processes sour gas from deeper area formations, and its amine treating unit strips out the acid gas—roughly 98% CO2 and 2% H2S—separating it from the clean sales-gas stream. Instead of being vented or flared, that acid gas is compressed, metered, and piped to a nearby well for permanent subsurface sequestration. Capture capacity is up to 9 MMscf/d, with the full stream routed to disposal, giving a clean one-to-one tie between CO2 captured and CO2 stored. The facility has operated since 2010 with injection underway since 2012, and runs on sour-service materials with continuous H2S detection and SCADA-based safety controls given the H2S in the stream.
