Barry Generating Plant
Plant Barry CCS FEED Study (Bucks, Alabama, USA): The Plant Barry CCS FEED Study is a Department of Energy–supported front-end engineering design (FEED) effort evaluating the integration of post-combustion carbon capture technology at Alabama Power’s Barry Unit 6 natural gas combined-cycle (NGCC) power plant to capture approximately 95 percent of CO₂ emissions (roughly 1.63 million metric tons per year). The study confirmed a viable technical and commercial pathway for deploying large-scale CCS retrofit on a gas-fired power plant, establishing cost, performance, and integration baselines ahead of potential later-stage engineering and construction. Project Participants and Roles: (1) Alabama Power (Host Plant Owner): Owner and operator of Plant Barry Unit 6, providing the physical site, operational data, and integration framework for the capture retrofit. (2) U.S. Department of Energy (DOE): Major federal funder of the FEED study through CCS and clean energy programs, enabling third-party engineering and design work. (3) GE Gas Power (Lead FEED Contractor): Lead engineering contractor responsible for performing the FEED study, evaluating carbon capture system design, integration with the gas turbine and heat recovery systems, and development of engineering deliverables. (4) Linde (Carbon Capture Technology Partner): Provider of CO₂ capture technology and process expertise within the FEED scope, defining solvent systems, absorber/stripper design, and CO₂ compression and conditioning systems. (5) Kiewit (Engineering / Cost Estimating Partner): Construction and cost estimating partner assisting with civil, structural, and mechanical engineering integration and independent validation of CAPEX/OPEX estimates. The FEED work advanced to approximately 50 percent completion, quantified capital and operating costs, and confirmed no major technical barriers, positioning the Barry CCS retrofit as a template for decarbonizing gas-fired power generation pending supportive policy and market conditions.
