DRAX
Drax BECCS Plant
The Drax BECCS project in North Yorkshire, UK, aims to become the world’s first carbon-negative power plant by capturing CO₂ from its biomass-fired units and storing it permanently underground. Since piloting carbon capture in 2018–2020, Drax has secured government development consent for two full-scale BECCS units, targeting around 8 million tonnes of CO₂ removal per year. While engineering and preparatory work are underway with partners like MHI and Worley, the project’s full deployment depends on clear UK policy support and commercial frameworks, and Drax has temporarily scaled back direct investment pending regulatory certainty.
