Genesee CCS Project
The Genesee CCS Project was a proposed industrial carbon capture initiative at the Genesee Generating Station in Leduc County, Alberta, led by Capital Power in partnership with Enbridge. The plan envisioned installing an amine-based post-combustion capture system at the repowered natural gas combined-cycle units to capture up to about 3 million tonnes of CO₂ per year from flue gas and transport it through Enbridge’s open-access carbon hub for permanent geological storage or utilization. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kiewit Energy Group completed Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) work, demonstrating a 95 percent capture rate and producing key engineering deliverables supporting integration, cost estimates, and execution planning. Although the engineering studies confirmed the technical viability of the carbon capture design and identified opportunities to leverage existing steam and electrical infrastructure, the project was discontinued in May 2024 due to economic feasibility challenges and uncertainty around incentives and commercial structure. Capital Power has indicated it may revisit CCS at Genesee in the future if technology costs and market conditions improve.
