Shell
Polaris
The Polaris carbon capture project is being built at Shell’s Scotford Energy and Chemicals Park in Alberta, Canada to capture CO₂ from emissions at the Shell-owned Scotford refinery and chemicals complex. The system is designed to capture about 650,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. Captured CO₂ will be piped about 22 kilometres to the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub, a permanent underground storage facility in the Basal Cambrian Sands geological formation, developed as a joint venture between Shell and ATCO EnPower. The Polaris project builds on Shell’s earlier Quest CCS facility at the same complex, which has stored millions of tonnes of CO₂ since 2015. Shell announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for Polaris in June 2024, and the project is expected to begin operations toward the end of 2028, subject to construction and permitting progress.
