Waitsia Gas Plant Carbon Capture Project
he Waitsia Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project is being developed by Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) in conjunction with the Cygnus CCS Hub, an onshore multi-user storage initiative in Western Australia’s Perth Basin. The concept centers on capturing CO₂ emissions associated with the Waitsia gas processing operations and transporting the CO₂ to nearby depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs for permanent geological storage via the Cygnus Hub. The Waitsia gas field, operated by MEPAU in joint venture with Beach Energy, is one of the largest onshore gas developments in Australia and serves as a primary anchor source for the proposed CCS value chain. The Cygnus Hub is designed as a scalable regional storage solution capable of accepting CO₂ from multiple industrial emitters, including gas processing and ammonia production facilities, leveraging existing subsurface data and infrastructure within the Perth Basin. Current activities remain focused on feasibility studies, subsurface appraisal, and engineering development to establish an integrated capture, transport, and storage system aimed at reducing operational emissions and supporting broader industrial decarbonization in Western Australia.
