Cygnus Hub
The Cygnus CCS Hub is an onshore carbon capture and storage project led by Mitsui E&P Australia (MEPAU) in partnership with Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy & Fertilisers (WesCEF) in the Mid West region of Western Australia. The project is being developed as a multi-user storage hub designed to capture, transport, and permanently store CO₂ emissions from hard-to-abate industrial facilities, including regional gas processing and ammonia production. Early concepts target storage of approximately ~0.5 Mtpa of CO₂, with potential sources including the Beach Energy-operated Waitsia gas plant and WesCEF’s CSBP ammonia operations. The storage concept involves injection into suitable depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, leveraging existing subsurface expertise and infrastructure. Technical development has included integrated injection testing and modeling supported by SLB, demonstrating successful CO₂ injection performance during pilot activities. The Cygnus Hub remains in development and feasibility stages, with ongoing engineering, subsurface appraisal, and regulatory progression aimed at establishing a scalable regional CCS solution supporting industrial decarbonization in Western Australia.
