Bayou Bend

The Bayou Bend CCS project is a major CO2 transportation and storage hub being developed along the Texas Gulf Coast to help industrial emitters in one of the nation’s largest industrial corridors lower their carbon intensity by capturing and permanently storing CO₂ underground. The project is led by Bayou Bend CCS LLC, a joint venture currently owned by Chevron (50 %), Equinor (25 %), and TotalEnergies (25 %), with Chevron serving as operator. The Bayou Bend footprint encompasses nearly 140,000 acres of onshore and offshore subsurface pore space for CO₂ storage, including approximately 100,000 acres onshore in Chambers and Jefferson Counties, Texas, plus about 40,000 acres offshore near Beaumont and Port Arthur. Overall gross storage potential is estimated at more than one billion metric tons of CO₂, positioning Bayou Bend to be one of the largest carbon storage projects in the United States. The project originated when Talos Energy and Carbonvert won the first offshore CO₂ storage lease awarded by the Texas General Land Office in Jefferson County, and later expanded onshore and attracted major energy partners. Talos executed the initial offshore lease and strategic technical alliances in 2022, and Equinor acquired a 25 % stake later that year, strengthening the venture’s low-carbon portfolio. Bayou Bend has progressed technical work including drilling onshore and offshore stratigraphic wells to characterize storage formations and submitted a Class VI permit application to the U.S. EPA, advancing toward commercial permitting. The CCS hub aims to serve emitters across the Houston Ship Channel, Beaumont/Port Arthur, and broader Southeast Texas region by providing large-scale permanent CO₂ storage infrastructure and facilitating decarbonization of hard-to-abate industrial sources.
