Cliff Head CCS (Mid West Clean Energy Project)
The Cliff Head CCS project, part of the Mid West Clean Energy Project, aims to repurpose the depleted Cliff Head offshore oil field into Australia’s first offshore carbon storage facility. It is designed to store up to 2.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually from both industrial sources and project-related emissions, with potential expansion to 5 million tonnes per year. Recent assessments have significantly increased the certified storage capacity to more than 90 million tonnes across the Cliff Head and adjacent Illawong structures. With full ownership of the offshore and onshore infrastructure secured, the project is progressing through pre-FEED and FEED stages and is positioned as a cornerstone of Australia’s clean energy transition, supporting hydrogen and ammonia production alongside large-scale carbon storage.
