Compass
The Compass Project, developed by Heartland Greenway Carbon Storage, a subsidiary of Navigator CO₂ Ventures, was a Class VI carbon sequestration initiative planned near Carle Springs in DeWitt County, Illinois. It aimed to capture CO₂ from Midwest industrial sources and inject it into the deep Mt. Simon Sandstone, using two injection wells, supported by multiple monitoring wells to track subsurface behavior and ensure containment. Annual storage capacity at Compass was projected at 2.5 million tonnes of CO₂, forming part of the broader Heartland Greenway network designed for up to 15 million tonnes per year of regional storage. In 2023, Navigator canceled the Heartland Greenway project, including Compass, citing the “unpredictable nature of the regulatory and government processes,” particularly in South Dakota and Iowa. The company had encountered multiple permit denials and opposition from landowners along the proposed pipeline route, leading to withdrawal of its applications in Illinois and other states.
